We all struggle with being focused at times, and we may need a little "nudge" to get back on track! In this blog, I will discuss five tips for staying focused while studying!
(I hope this is the "nudge" you need to get back your focus 😊)

1. Find Your Suitable Study Environment
A study environment can undoubtedly affect the mood and tone of your study session. But, it is also important to note that everyone thrives in different settings. For example, certain individuals prefer to study in the comfort and silence of their homes. Conversely, others find libraries and coffee shops with ambience noise to be their study haven. It is important to find what works for you and your needs!
REMEMBER! YOUR STUDY ENVIRONMENT MUST HAVE THESE TWO COMPONENTS TO ENSURE FOCUS:
Comfortable Seating
Clear Surface
2. Create Precise Study Goals
From time to time, everyone needs a reminder of what they are endeavouring for. To be focused, it is necessary to understand why you need to study? Ask yourself this: What am I studying for? Then, write the answer in your planner, on a piece of paper or somewhere that is visible to you. Whenever you feel that your focus is slipping away, recall/go back to your answer. Let that be your guide back to focus.
📝 My Study Goal: I am studying to achieve superior grades so that I can become my ideal profession.

3. Create A Study Schedule
As humans, we are creatures of habits. Thus, study schedules are excellent for establishing routines that you can stick to. Study schedules can help you track your progress and give you a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. After all, everyone needs some encouragement from time to time! In long term, following their structure every day, can even help you develop a habit of studying without needing to push yourself!
When creating a study schedule, make sure to include the following:
Goals & Deadlines
Breaks/Free Time
4. Eliminate All Distractions
This tip might be an obvious one to everyone. However, it can go a long way when practiced. Interesting notion: It takes an individual 23 minutes to redirect their focus back to their work. Blocking distractions while studying allows you to increase your focus when, studying to fully process information, and save 23 minutes of your time!
4 METHODS TO ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS WHEN STUDYING:
1. Turn Off your Phone!
According to a Harvard case study, when an individual receives any notification from our phones, sends a chemical called dopamine* which is then released in our rewards pathways. Thus, creating a sense of pleasure. With time, these dopamine releases become more addictive, making us want/crave the feeling of pleasure more and more. Therefore, when needing to focus, resisting the urge to use your phone not only decreases your chance of becoming addicted but also allows you to focus for longer periods.
2. Remove unnecessary objects from your desk.
3. Refrain from working from your bed.
4. Do not attempt to multitask.
*Definition: dopamine is a monoamine neurotransmitter.
Structure: an amino group (single nitrogen atom bonded with two hydrogen atoms) attached to an aromatic ring (a hydrocarbon creating the molecule benzene; it contacts six carbons and 6 hydrogens, C6H6) via a double-bonded carbon.
5. Go On "Focus" Breaks
Though too many can lead to procrastination, breaks can be a beneficial thing to do to regain your focus! Allow yourself to have five to ten minutes to recompose yourself; this even allows you to return to your study session with even more focus.
WHAT TO DO ON YOUR "FOCUS" BREAKS:
Go for a walk.
Take a look out the window.
Meditate
Stretch
✏️ TIP: Refrain from using your phone or any electronics during your "Focus" breaks!
In addition to "Focus" Breaks, you can also try doing the Pomodoro Technique.
THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE IN 5 EASY STEPS:
STEP ONE: 🗒 Pick A Task
STEP TWO: ⏱ Set A 25 minutes timer
STEP THREE: 👩💻 Work on your chosen task until you hear the ringer!
STEP FOUR: 😌 Take a 5 minutes break
STEP FIVE: 🔁 Repeat BUT, during every interval-pomodoros-add 5 minutes to your break!
This technique is effective in setting a sense of discipline. With the timer present, you only have 25 minutes to make progress. Therefore, this allows you to work with your full effort and focus. Instead of working for long hours and with no breaks, the Pomodoro Technique allows you to have both in addition to high-quality work and focus.
